Allen closed with a 5-under 65, also birdieing the Par-5 18th in regulation to match Browne at 13-under. Allen takes home a check for $249,000.00. Dr. Glenn Pinckney, Sr., Executive Director of CAAP (Christians Aligned for Action & Principles, Inc.) hosted "An Evening to Remember" featuring dinner with Guest Speaker Dr. Ben Carson at Hickory's Crowne Plaza, followed by at Star Studded evening sponsored in part by the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce at the Hickory Metro Convention Center. It was a full house, as Dr. Carson spoke of his remarkable journey, starting as a tough inner city youth and having a dream of growing up and becoming a physician. His mother, with only a third grade education, challenged him to strive for excellence. Today he is a retired pediatric neurosurgeon from Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. The response to Dr. Ben Carson has been overwhelming. As one of the few African Americans to publicly disagree with President Obama, Dr. Carson has gained national attention. "Business at the Ball Park", Hickory, NC - 07-17-13
The Chamber's "Business at the Ball Park" was held this evening at L.P. Frans Stadium. It's a great way to smooozzz with Chamber Members and friends and then take in the nearly famous Hickory "Crawdads" as they beat the Hagerstown, Maryland, "Suns". The Hickory Crawdads returned to Crawdads Stadium Wednesday night and picked up right where they left off on the road trip, as the 'Dads threw their second straight shutout in a 6-0 win over the Hagerstown Suns. The Crawdads concluded their 7-game road trip Monday with a 3-0 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws, before picking up the shutout win in their first game back on Wednesday. The 6-0 win marked the second time this year the 'Dads pitched consecutive shutouts, joining Hickory's 7-0 and 5-0 wins over Greensboro this past June. The City of Morganton held it's Tenth Annual "Red, White & Bluegrass Festival". Five days and nights of music at Catawba Meadows Park, ending on the Fourth of July with a major fireworks salute. Cindy Baucom, radio host of "Knee Deep in Bluegrass" was the Festival Emcee. The event was directed by Gary W. Leonhardt for the City of Morganton. The City of Hickory held a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of their new 23 million dollar North East Waste Water Treatment Facility. The plant is designed to treat 6 million gallons of waste water per day. It operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. A Blast from the Past. A guy I haven't seen for over 40 years, calls me up and says he's passing thru NC. I told him I think of him every day I go out to the garage and explained, I've got a very old billboard covering a hole in the wall of my garage with his name on it. Yes, it's none other than well known Miami Radio & TV Broadcaster Larry Roberts (Shannon). The last time I saw Larry, he told me he was going to quit WCIX-TV's "Racing for Dollars" because they wouldn't pay him more that the $125/wk. We both made more spinning at the local Disco's that were starting to become popular. It was 1972. I recall, the producers asked me and I told them "not for that kind of money". So they wind up with a very down on his luck, Larry King. It would be ten years before he goes national with an all night chat show on The Mutual Radio Network. Larry Shannon went on to be anchor man in San Diego in the 80's. Larry also worked for years, as the Meteorologist at WDIV-TV (formerly WWJ-TV The Detroit News) along side the one and only "Sunny Elliot". This first time I saw Sunny was when I was in first grade. He was one funny guy and Larry told me he loved working with him. So now you know the rest of the story. - Conover, NC 03-15-13

The Society of Broadcast Engineers, Chapter 45, held their first meeting of the new year at WTVI-TV Channel 42, the PBS Affiliate in Charlotte, NC. This months luncheon meeting was sponsored by nationally known Broadcast equipment dealer SCMS, Inc. of Charlotte. Special guest speaker was Ken Dillard, Senior Enterprise Account Executive of Digital Nirvana. Mr. Dillard gave a current overview of the FCC's new rules on TV audio loudness. The CALM (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act) became law last month. One of Digital Nirvana's products is "Monitor IQ" and is used by Broadcasters, cable operators & satellite distributors for logging, content repurposing, compliance monitoring and simple editing.
